How to use mazemaze, and what to do when something doesn't work. If you're still stuck, feel free to reach out below.

Basics

Mixing a page

With the page open, click the mazemaze icon in the toolbar, choose the page language, the language to learn and the ratio, then press "Mix". Some of the sentences on the page are swapped into your target language. Turn on "Auto mix" to mix new pages automatically with your saved settings. It is off by default.

Seeing the original / undoing

Click a swapped sentence to see the original (click again to switch back). To restore the whole page, press "Undo" in the popup. Reloading the page also restores it.

Changing the look

Under "Look of swapped sentences" you can choose highlight (colored), underline only, or blend in (no decoration). It applies instantly to pages that are already mixed.

Infinite Scroll Mixing & Per-Site Auto Settings

On social feeds and infinite scrolling pages, newly loaded text is automatically mixed as you scroll down. You can also click the site toggle in the popup to auto-mix that domain on future visits. Press Alt+M (Option+M on Mac) at any time to toggle the entire page between original and mixed text instantly.

Troubleshooting

"Chrome could not load its translation library"

Chrome's translation feature (language packs) isn't ready yet. Please try the following steps.

  1. Type chrome://on-device-translation-internals in the address bar and open it
  2. Press "Install" for the language pair you want (e.g. Japanese ⇄ English)
  3. Open chrome://components and press "Check for update" on "Chrome TranslateKit"
  4. Restart Chrome and press "Mix" again
  5. If built-in AI is unavailable, you can optionally enter your Gemini or OpenAI API key in '⚙️ Advanced Settings' (chosen text is sent to the provider; provider pricing and availability apply).

Some pages can't be mixed

Browser settings pages (chrome://…), the Chrome Web Store and some embedded pages can't be modified by extensions. Code blocks, input fields and editable areas are also skipped on purpose so they don't get in the way.

About the translation model download

The first time you use a language pair, Chrome downloads the translation model automatically (once only, a few dozen MB). Progress is shown while downloading. If a banner appears on the page, press "Download and start".

Requirements

Supported computers and Chrome versions

Standard built-in translation works on Chrome 138+ on Windows, macOS, and ChromeOS. On desktop Chrome environments where this extension can run, you can optionally connect a Gemini or OpenAI API key if built-in AI is unsupported (mobile Chrome and other environments without extension support are not supported; chosen text is sent to the provider and provider pricing applies).
